I’m a magician member of the Academy of Magical Arts, the private club behind the Magic Castle in Hollywood. If you’ve ever sat in one of those little rooms and watched someone do the impossible two feet from your face, that’s exactly what your guests get, in your living room, on your rooftop or in a hotel ballroom, without needing to know a member.
What the membership tells you (and what it doesn’t)
Anybody can call themselves a magician. There’s no license and no exam. If you’re about to hire someone you’ve never seen perform, that’s a real problem.
Magician membership at the Academy is one of the few filters there is. You audition in person, in front of a panel of members who’ve been doing this for decades. They judge your technique and how you present it, and they want to know whether you understand the craft and where it comes from. Plenty of people don’t pass the first time.
It can’t tell you whether I’m right for your particular party. A phone call will tell you that. What it does tell you is that I’ve been vetted by other magicians, in a small room, at close range, which is about the hardest audience there is.
The Castle style
The Castle is built around small rooms. The most famous one, the Close-Up Gallery, seats a couple of dozen people. The style that comes out of rooms like that is conversational and precise, and it has to hold up when the audience could reach out and touch the cards. A walkaround set at a party asks for exactly the same thing.
What I perform
Mentalism first, which is mind reading and prediction. Close-up magic second, with cards, coins and whatever I can borrow from your guests. At events I work as a strolling performer, and there’s an optional short parlor show if you want everyone watching together.
Questions about the Magic Castle connection
Can you really hire a magician from the Magic Castle for a private event?
You can. The Magic Castle is the clubhouse of the Academy of Magical Arts, and its magician members are free to take private bookings. I’m one of them. I do private parties, company events and weddings all over Southern California.
What does “magician member” mean?
The Academy has a few kinds of membership. Magician membership is the kind you have to audition for. You perform in front of a committee of experienced members, they quiz you on the craft, and then they either let you in or tell you to come back when you’re ready.
If I book you, can you get me into the Castle?
That’s a different thing. You get into the Castle as the guest of a member and it’s arranged separately. This page is about me bringing that kind of close-up magic to your event.
Is this affiliated with the Magic Castle?
No. I’m an individual member of the Academy of Magical Arts. You’d be booking me directly, and the Academy has nothing to do with it.
