Adult birthday party entertainment in Los AngelesMake it the birthday that gets brought up at everyone else’s.

A big birthday pulls in people from every chapter of someone’s life, and most of them have never met. I’ll give them something in common inside the first half hour. Then, right before the toast, the person whose name is on the cake gets a moment built just for them, with the whole party watching.

How it goes

While people are arriving and getting a drink, I work my way through the party in small groups. I’ll read a few minds and do some close-up magic along the way. By the time everybody’s arrived there’s already a story going around about the guy in the suit.

Then, whenever you say, I do one piece for the birthday person with the whole party watching. It’s built around them, from details you’ve slipped me beforehand. It works nicely as a lead-in to the toast, mostly because everyone’s already looking in the right direction.

I do 30ths through 70ths, surprise parties (I’m happy to be part of the surprise), backyards, restaurant private rooms and rented venues. Twenty guests is fine and so is a hundred and fifty.

I should say what this isn’t. You won’t be getting a kids’ show with the jokes swapped out, and you won’t be getting a roast. Nobody gets embarrassed, least of all the person turning fifty, who already has plenty on their mind.

From birthday hosts

“My father-in-law doesn’t like anything. He followed Shayne around the backyard for half an hour.”

Dana R., her husband’s 50th, Pasadena

“Hired him as a surprise for my wife’s birthday and figured it’d be a fun twenty minutes. Two hours later people were still trailing him from room to room.”

Questions about birthdays

Isn’t a magician a weird choice for a grown-up’s birthday?

I get why you’d think so, and it’s exactly why I lead with mentalism. I don’t own a top hat and I couldn’t make you a balloon animal if you paid me. Think of it more as having one very unusual guest who seems to know what everyone’s thinking.

Can you do something special for the birthday person?

Yes, that’s my favorite part. Give me a few details ahead of time (a name, a date, a place that means something) and I’ll build a piece around them. I usually do it just before the toast with everybody watching.

How long for a 40th or 50th?

For thirty to fifty guests, an hour of strolling and then the personal piece. For sixty to a hundred and twenty, two hours.

We’re having it at a restaurant. Does that work?

Private rooms and buyouts work well. If you’ve just got a few tables in a shared dining room, check the restaurant’s okay with me moving between them. Most are.

Tell me about the birthday and I’ll call you.

I’d rather talk for ten minutes than trade six emails. I’ll ask about the crowd and the timing, tell you what I’d do, and give you a price before we hang up. You don’t have to decide on the call.

Sets start at $700.
